It takes a village

More and more I keep reading about start-up Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC), and this article discussing Safe Harbor on Hilton Head Island, is yet another example.

NORCs are neighborhoods where residents have naturally aged in place in their own homes and want to continue to do so as independently and safely as possible. Typically, the residents of the neighborhood will pay a dues that will help to fund services that are needed to help them continue to age in place such as home repairs/modifications, meal delivery, transportation to doctor appointments, and housekeeping are just a few. This system allows the resident to age in place and costs less than a nursing facility. It is important to note that for the Hilton Head NORC, as with many others, “the only requirement to receive such services is that the people being helped aren’t putting themselves at risk by living at home”.

I think this is another great option to allow residents to continue to live safely within their own homes. What do you think of NORCs? Do you know if you are currently living in one?
