Pioneer in Universal Design

Some people are awestruck by celebrities; I am awestruck by those who are passionate about making a change in our world and yet others who persist in the face of adversity.  Edward Steinfeld, a University at Buffalo architecture professor, is one of those people to me.

Steinfeld is the founder of UB’s Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access.  His many accomplishments and years of experience are discussed in an article that is celebrating his work and honoring him with the university’s Presidential Award for Faculty Excellence.  Steinfeld states, “The idea is, we want to develop a better environment for everyone.  I think architecture is most powerful when it is socially responsible.”

This article inspires me and my work as an accessibility consultant.  I continue to enjoy providing access for clients within their own homes, but am passionate about community access, or what I call “creating access to life”, and serving the greater good.
