Man’s best friend: agility training with a disability

Six months ago we became the proud parents of a very exuberant American Bulldog/Pitbull mix puppy.  He is a rescue, and they estimated his age at the time to be about 8 months old.  There is a lot of  misinformation about Pitbulls, but Leroy is an incredibly loving dog, with lots of energy.

From the time we adopted Leroy, Bill has been able to independently manage caring for him, using his power wheelchair to manage him when we are outside.  However, we always wondered about the possibilities of getting him involved in an activity that would allow him to use some of that amazing strength, speed and energy.

In looking into our options, we learned of a woman named Phillipa Armstrong from England.  She is a successful dog agility trainer and “the only person to qualify for a national final while controlling her dogs from a wheelchair”.

There are two organizations in the United States that have divisions for disabled handlers: The North American Dog Agility Council and Canine Performance Events, Inc.  There is certainly a process to get your dog to compete in an agility event, but we were happy to learn that being a disabled handler is a possibility.  Perhaps this is the start of an agility career for Leroy and Bill.

Welcome to the sport! I hope you and Leroy have many a clean run! You Rock! If you’re ever in Las Vegas, come check out our CPE trials! My dog’s first agility ribbons were at a CPE show!

I’d like ideas on a wheelchair for dog agility. I’d do mostly outdoors on grass or hard pack sand.
