Universal Green Design Demonstration Home

It is exciting to see more and more Universal Design demonstration homes popping up all over the country.  The Universal Design Living Laboratory, The Eskaton Home and The Green Mountain Ranch, are a few inspiring examples.  A new home, combining Universal Design with green and sustainable building, is currently being built in Washington State.

The ‘Green Access Home at Suncadia’, is a 2,000 square foot green built contemporary family mountain cabin located within a Sustainable Preserve in the Pines. Per the website, this is the first custom home being built for the owners, Michael and Susie Carr.  They report, “We’re excited about building a home that is universally accessible for us now and as we grow older, and we’re committed to keeping our home as low-impact and sustainable as possible within our budget.” The house is still within the construction phase, and is slated to be completed in September 2010.

This house looks to be quite a beautiful display of Universal Design, Green and Sustainable building.  Being a fan of contemporary design, I am intrigued by the blending of the contemporary home as a mountain cabin.  I am excited for the owners to have their dream accessible home that will allow them to age in place, and for the continued effort to increase awareness of Universal Design within their community.  If I ever find myself in Washington, this would certainly be on my list to visit!
