The international community is continuing their efforts to increase awareness to Universal Design as well as give honors to its implementation.  In Singapore, the Building and Construction Authority “has awarded 13 buildings with two gold (for the first time), and two silver and nine bronze for the BCA Universal Design Awards”.

These awards were introduced in 2007 with “the objective to give recognition to good practices and special efforts taken to raise awareness of the importance of providing seamless accessible built environment for all.”  Click on this link to see the specifics of how UD principles were integrated into each of these projects. There are six different award categories of buildings/structures that are eligible for awards with the judging criteria being Connectivity, Accessibility, User Friendliness, Safety, Integrated Design, Operations and Maintenance and a Bonus for Innovation and Enhancement.

Kudos Singapore!
