(Re)Building Downtown
Smart Growth America’s recent article in (Re)Building Downtown areas certainly hits upon many concepts that I am a proponent of–creating walkable spaces, promoting employment, maximizing social and civic engagement, multi-modal transportation and diverse housing options. They provide a brief outline in the article with link to the GuideBook for Revitalization (link to article and subsequent guidebook below).
Upon perusing the guidebook I cannot help but notice that there is a lack of any language regarding the design of these spaces specific to meeting the needs of a wide spectrum of users. Keywords such as Universal Design, Inclusive Design, Aging, and Aging in Place, are all missing. Equity is discussed, but from a socioeconomic standpoint, but misses the mark on meeting the needs of users regardless of age or ability level.
How are we to effectively (Re)Build Downtown if we are not taking into consideration all of the users?
Penny for your thoughts….
